On drawing and truth
“In contemporary drawing, intentionality has to do with personalizing the image and arriving at a personal truth. A personal truth is not necessarily the same as a universal truth, but it could be, and it is left up to time to decide that. (…) it is turned to by artists who seek to express something completely personal and honest. Drawing has always provided a direct path to this kind of truth.” Chapter Two, Mark
This passage in a somewhat banal reading I did for class, resonated with me. The reasons for which I draw are to explore ideas and for aesthetics of course… but also to sort of hopefully find some scattered pieces of me, of my own truth, beneath the clichés, archetypes and humor. Some part of me thinks I will never find it… but I don’t think I am able to stop looking, either.
